Pastoral Care

A carefully integrated pastoral care program exists within the school to foster the growth of individual students in the context of an egalitarian, caring community. The key to this is each child feels known and respected. Form teachers take significant responsibility for the care of students in their form and pastoral care groups. These teachers know the students in their care very well and for many individual matters, they will tend to respond initially to any parental or student concerns. They see the students in their form class every day and will nurture and guide these same students every year until they are ready to leave Brisbane State
High School.

Structure

The pastoral care structure, consisting of form teachers and year level co-ordinators, delivers programs on a developmental basis according to age appropriate learning and resources. They also provide one-on-one monitoring and individual support for students in academic, social and personal areas. This is implemented through daily form lessons (FRM) and a weekly pastoral care lesson (PCL) which address the ongoing needs of students in the areas of life skills, communication skills, social and individual health, study skills, career development, risk management and social concern.

Seminars on individual and social issues take place throughout the year, and social service activities to benefit the wider community aim to raise students' awareness of the wider world.

Features

The PCL program incorporates developing positive self-esteem, personal values and emotional resilience. Other important features of the program are assertiveness, feelings, resolving conflict, strengthening support networks, dealing with stress, study habits, staying safe, caring for others, making decisions and developing friendships. The program is built primarily on respect for the individual and others and enables them to develop a greater ability to handle life's challenges.
