Alternative Pathways
Alternative pathways such as school-based traineeships and apprenticeships, work experience, TAFE and other RTO links (Registered Training Organisations) and senior over three years are available to year 11 and 12 students. In some cases, year 10 students can access these pathways.
School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Year 11 and 12 students may undertake School-based Apprenticeships or Traineeships (SAT’s). Year 10 students may apply towards the end of their school year. Students may complete a SAT as part of their Senior School studies and at the same time engage in recognised Certificate II or III level training and paid work. Students who complete a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship may exit Year 12 with a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) which outlines their school achievements as well as their vocational studies. Interested students should check the Employment Options web site on the school's intranet and speak to Vocational Education Coordinator or the Head of Department Senior Schooling.
Work experience
Two one-week blocks of Work Experience will be available to those students in Years 10 and 11. These one week blocks will usually occur in the last week of each semester. The school will organise these students to be placed in accredited work placements. It is an advantage if parents and students are able to provide possible work placements. For all work experience placements an expression of interest form will need to be submitted to the school. All work experience must be covered by an Education Queensland insurance document. For further information contact the Vocational Education Coordinator or the Head of Department Senior Schooling.
TAFE and Private Provider Courses
In order to broaden vocational options, senior students may enrol in TAFE accredited subjects at TAFE colleges or through many other private providers. For example, a Certificate II in Visual Communication is offered through Design College Australia. Students need to
- be committed to completing the course
- be prepared to pay for any costs
- arrange their own transport to and from the college
A certificate is issued on completion of the course and some TAFE subjects are recorded on the Senior Certificate and contribute towards TAFE certification courses. For further information contact the Vocational Education Coordinator or the Head of Department Senior Schooling.
Senior over three years
If a student wishes to apply to complete senior over three years, a letter of application must be written to the Principal. For further information contact the Head of Department for Senior Schooling.
