This school supports the development of students as responsible, aware and concerned citizens. Co-curricular activities such as sport, music, drama, chess and debating provide important and enjoyable learning experiences for our students. As such, the co-curricular program is seen as a desirable complement to classroom activities. Indeed, it has been observed that involvement with co-curricular activities often provides a positive contribution to academic pursuits.
sport
Consequently, such activities are a valued part of State High life and, with the range of co-curricular activities on offer, all students are strongly encouraged to become involved. The activities usually take place after school or on Saturdays. We expect that players be committed to the school in order to fulfil our commitments in the GPS and QGSSSA competitions. School sporting commitments should take precedence over any other competition.
Students may in fact play more than one sport during a season where there will be no conflict. This most often applies during Term 1 when swimming occurs on a Friday night and cricket or volleyball is played on a Saturday. All students are encouraged to attend championship events, for example the Swimming, Rowing, Cross Country and Athletic Championships. We would hope that parents would encourage their children to attend and support these events.
AGE GROUPS
GPS Age groups are determined for boys at 1 November of the previous year for Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming and Rugby. To be in the Under 13 age group, boys must have turned 13 on or after 1 November in the previous year. All other boys sports are to be played in year levels as of 2009. In girls’ sport, age groups are determined by the age the girl turns in the year. In addition, many QGSSSA sports are conducted in year levels.

PLAYING VENUES
Boys’ and girls’ fixtures are played on a home and away basis. The specific draw for each sport will be published in each sport’s handbook and in the Activity section of this web site. Home fixtures for boys’ sport and some girls’ sports are played at our fields at Fursden Road, Carina.
SATURDAY SPORT
In general, all boys’ sport is conducted out of school time on Saturday morning or afternoon. Girls' sport is usually conducted after school, mainly Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
LEVY
Each sport is required to set a levy for participants to cover the costs of running the program. This levy is spent on items such as uniforms, transport, equipment, umpires and trophies. It should be paid by the third week of the chosen sport competition. Payment is made through the student counter in A Block and should not be made until the first week of competition.
PARENTS
We expect the following from parents and spectators.
- Provide a model of good behaviour for all players.
- Demonstrate courtesy towards all players, officials and all spectators.
- Encourage honest effort, skilled performance, and team loyalty.
- Let game officials conduct the match without interference, yet be willing to provide assistance if requested
INFORMATION
Information relating to a sporting activity in general can be accessed on our web site while each Saturday’s activity can be accessed on the Sport this Week page. In addition many sports publish a booklet containing information relating to their specific activity. Additional information for players will be obtained from morning notices, information placed on school notice boards and also may be given out at the individual sport forums held weekly throughout the season. The wet weather phone number is 3291 4188.
SUB-COMMITTEES
Most sports have a sub-committee organised and run by parents to assist the MIC (Master in Charge) at the school in the running of that program. These committees meet on a regular basis during the season.
COACHES/MANAGERS/GAME OFFICIALS (Blue Cards)
Due to the number of teams playing each week it is impossible to have teams covered by teacher coaches. We rely on past students and parents to help with the coaching. If you can help out in the coaching of any of our teams we would certainly like to hear from you. All coaches at State High are volunteers. Volunteer coaches may require a blue card which may be organised through the MIC of that activity. (Parents of current students do not require a blue card). As such any help that you could offer in relation to coaching teams or managing teams, scoring, officiating or working in the canteen would be greatly appreciated.
TEAMS/TRIALS/TRAINING/GAMES
In many sports there are a number of teams in each age group - this allows players to be in a team which reflects their ability. Players may move between teams depending on performance. Prior to the season starting, trials will be held – notification of the trials will be given via the morning notices. Once a student has committed to a sport it is expected that all requirements of that sport, including attendance at training and games, are fulfilled.
TRANSPORT
Transport to games varies with each sport and may involve organised buses, car-pooling by parents or students finding their own way. Each sport will provide more specific information for their activity. Where the school organises transport, all students are expected to travel by that means to the venue. If alternative arrangements are made parents are expected to inform the MIC/Sports Office in writing of these arrangements.
UNIFORM POLICY
Students are expected to travel to and from fixtures in either their school day uniform or their sports uniform. Naturally, all team members are expected to wear the official team uniform.
DINNERS
At the conclusion of each season many activities hold an ‘end of season’ presentation dinner or breakfast. These are sometimes held at outside venues. Information relating to costs, times and venues are provided during the season.
POCKETS
Participation and excellence in sport are recognised by the awarding of pockets. Any student who participates and meets the criteria for a pocket is eligible to have the activity embroidered on their school blazer. Pockets are awarded to students at the end of a season based on the performance of the team and the individual throughout the season. They are determined by the coach in conjunction with the MIC of that activity and are either: award (sewn in red), half (sewn in silver) or full (sewn in gold) pockets. A gold pocket is received when a student has received 4 full pockets in at least two different activities.
instrumental music
State High fosters musical excellence through opportunities for involvement in instrumental music and vocal groups. More than 300 students are currently involved.
The Instrumental Music Program encompasses strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Students who undertake tuition in school time are required to join an ensemble such as a Symphony or String Orchestra, Concert Band musical group. The group the student should join will be decided by the Instrumental teachers. Students in Years 11 and 12 who receive tuition outside school hours but who do not learn the instrument at school may audition and join an ensemble if there is a vacancy in the ensemble which cannot be filled by a student who learns at school. The proficiency level of the musical groups ranges from beginner through to advanced ensemble. Public performance is an integral part of the Instrumental Music Program. The school may also offer vocal ensembles where staff is available.
