State High in the 1940s

This article was written by Mr Barry Irwin based on Junior Dickson's address.

Junior Dickson (Class of 1947), represented the 1940's. A lifelong supporter and passionate advocate of all that is State High, Junior recounted the decade that saw three principals, Isaacs Waddle, the founding principal, J.A. Barnes and H.G Watkins, who went on to higher office in the Education Department.

1941 also saw the "three musketeers" or "holy trinity", namely George Lockie, Viv Honour and Harry Atwell begin to exert their considerable influence on the continuing development of the school ethos.

Success on the sporting fields was celebrated with the first GPS Athletics premiership in 1946, the first Football premiership in 1947, the Head of the River in 1948 and the first Cricket premiership in 1949.

In his inimitable style, Junior's presentation was with humility, sincerity and his affection for his alma mater was obvious.
