The State High Culture

In many ways, with its long and proud history, the culture of Brisbane State High School could be said to be conservative.  Within this context, the school has the advantage of providing an environment that is both co-educational and multicultural, a setting that encourages an aware and tolerant group of young people who work and play in a generally harmonious school community.  This environment helps to provide a preparation for engagement with the life of tertiary study and for other post-school environments.  The encouragement of genuine independence is a major feature of the school culture.

The depth and breadth of education offered to students in any school depends on a range of tangible and intangible features.  Its quality depends on tuition, on the availability of print and electronic resources and of subject-specific resources, on the standard and upkeep of facilities, the access to experiences outside the classroom and the ability of staff to provide coaching and other support to students out of school hours.  Brisbane State High School offers an excellent combination of all these attributes.

As well as opportunities offered by the formal curriculum and the co-curricular program, the school provides to our students other opportunities for developing their potential.  Leadership and community awareness are developed through service as Prefects, House Captains, Sporting Captains, through participation in cultural activities, through support for charitable organisations, and in other capacities such as involvement in an active Student Council.
