Fact Sheet: Sibling Entry

This category only applies to Applicants whose elder siblings enrolled under the ACADEMIC MERIT Category of Enrolment PRIOR TO 31 MARCH 1998.

Late in 1997, and in subsequent years, the Enrolment Policy of Brisbane State High School was reviewed. Following the consultation conducted with stakeholders of the School community, decisions to refine some conditions of entry to Brisbane State High School have been implemented. These changes are set out in the Brisbane State High School Enrolment Policy.

The school believes it is important to keep faith with parents whose decision (prior to 31 March 1998) to enrol their elder child in a school which may have been far from home, may have been conditioned by the belief that younger siblings would have right of entry. It is important to note therefore that parents/legal guardians whose elder child enrolled under the Academic Merit category of enrolment prior to 31 March 1998 will still be able to take advantage of the right of entry into Year 8 of younger siblings, under certain conditions as set out below.

Please note that to meet the requirements of Sibling enrolment, an older member of the family whose enrolment was based on their own, or their elder sibling's Academic Merit, must still be enrolled, i.e., in attendance at the school at the time of application by the younger member.

Please note also that automatic Sibling entry does not apply to the younger brothers and sisters of students whose entry to the school under Academic and/or Sporting & Cultural Merit was after 31 March 1998. All applicants who have enrolled at the school after that date have received, as part of the application package, a statement describing current eligibility requirements.

For younger siblings of students who enrolled under the Local Catchment Area category, it will naturally be necessary to demonstrate that the family continues to have their Principal Place of Residence within the Local Catchment Area. Please see the Brisbane State High School Enrolment Policy for details.

Original documents required for all applicants to BSHS

For all applicants, we need to see original documents which prove that the child is entitled to attend a State school without paying full fees (as would be the case for fee-paying overseas students). We therefore need to see at least one of the following:

  • Child's Australian birth certificate. (It is a Commonwealth Government proviso that for Australian births prior to 20 August 1986, the child's Birth Certificate is sufficient. For births after that date, the child's certificate must be accompanied by evidence that, at the time of the birth, at least one of the parents was an Australian citizen.) OR
  • Australian or New Zealand passport (of student NOT parent) OR
  • Australian citizenship certificate (of student or parent) OR
  • Appropriate visa

Other original documents required for sibling entry

Child's original school reports for previous three semesters. These do not form part of the selection process for the Sibling Entry applicants, but may be used by our teachers in assisting students.

To ensure prompt processing of the application, all relevant original documents should be included with the application form. Applications which are incomplete will not be processed.

Note 1:

All applications must include the original documents and a photocopy of each document. The original will be sighted and the supplied copy verified. The original documents will be returned to the applicant's parents (identification required) or will be returned via mail. Brisbane State High School can take no responsibility for documents returned via mail.
