Fact Sheet: Music Merit

Brisbane State High School has a strong tradition of excellence in the Performing Arts, in particular Music. Students who join the Music Program must play an orchestral instrument and are offered the opportunity to experience a variety of musical styles across a range of performance events.

Students who enrol under the Music Merit category (instrumental music only, not including piano) are required to join the instrumental classes, including group tutorials which are held in school time (Brass, Woodwind, Strings, Percussion) from Year 8 through to Year 10.

From year to year the need for specific instruments for inclusion in the school program may vary, depending on existing music enrolments and the balance of instruments within ensembles. The school therefore has absolute discretionary power to determine in which musical activities, and to which students in a particular activity, it has the capacity to offer assistance and support.

Students applying for entry into Year 8 must have achieved a minimum of

  • AMEB Grade 6 for violin
  • AMEB Grade 4 for most other instruments.

For students applying to other year levels, please check with the school for the minimum standard prior to application.

In cases where a student has not completed AMEB examinations, the student may submit

  • A five minute VHS video or DVD (not in concert mode, but in close up). See more information regarding the DVD.
  • A video or DVD will be accepted only if it is accompanied by a reference from a registered and practising Education Queensland Instrumental Music Teacher stipulating that the student is playing at the specified AMEB level.
  • References from private music teachers are not acceptable.
  • CDs will not be accepted.
