General Information
The Student Group
State High students originate from over one hundred primary schools. Our student body is representative of the wider Australian population in that students come from both English and non-English speaking backgrounds. There are three categories of enrolment -
- principal residence in the defined local area
- academic merit
- sporting/cultural merit (including music merit and art merit)
Accountability and transparency in access to enrolment at State High are provided by the Brisbane State High enrolment plan.
Brisbane State High School has a proud tradition of very high attainment in academic pursuits, consistently achieving levels of excellence across the curriculum. Students of all academic abilities are encouraged and supported in their learning. Almost all of our students complete Year 12, and the majority of these continue on to university or other tertiary study.
Across all activities in which they are involved, State High students consistently bring credit to themselves, as well as pride to their teachers and their school.
Staffing and Management
Education Queensland bears the overall responsibility for education in this State. Within the department's structure, Brisbane State High School is in Brisbane South District, although the school retains the responsibility for most of its own strategic and operational management.
The Administration and Management team of State High comprises a Principal, four Deputy Principals and thirteen Heads of Department. There are two Guidance Officers, three Support Teachers and two English-as-a-Second-Language support teachers, with one hundred and twenty teaching staff and fifty non-teaching staff. The professional and other qualifications of the staff are exemplary: they include multiple formal qualifications, and many teachers are also actively involved in professional associations. In addition to the teachers' school duties, the expertise of many State High department heads and teachers is utilised by the Queensland Studies Authority. Through their involvement in co-curricular and other activities, teachers also contribute significant periods of out-of-school time directly to the students.
The Business Services Manager manages the finances and fabric of the school, as well as a large group of support staff.
Dress Code
Brisbane State High School has and maintains a high standard of dress. The Uniform Policy states that Brisbane State High is a uniform school. Its dress standards reflect the community expectations and standards, as determined by the Principal in consultation with school community representatives. The wearing of full, correct uniform is expected of all students. The school community's strong stand on uniform reflects the pride of its members and the prestige of State High in the wider community.
Finance
While there are no charges for tuition at any state school, voluntary contributions are sought for some other components of education at State High, such as:
- resources used in various subject areas,
- Information Communication Technology Services,
- Student Identity Cards,
- Student Diaries,
- Venue Hire (Graduation, Full School Assemblies, Athletics and Swimming Carnivals),
- for excursions and trips,
- membership of the GPS, QGSSSA and QSSSA Organisations.
Co-curricular activities also involve a 'user pays' component. Parents receive the State Text Book Allowance. No textbook hire scheme is presently operating. All fees charged by State High are, by any standard, modest, especially when compared with the services and opportunities which the school offers to students.
