Fact Sheet: Art Merit
Fiona Harding
Mixed Media Drawing detail
The Brisbane State High School 'Art Factory' became operational in 1999. It boasts a number of large studio spaces, a lecture room, and a library and computer room. It is purposely designed to ensure that equipment and supplies are readily available to students, with teacher mentoring and guidance. Interaction is fostered between students and teachers, and between the students themselves. The 'Art Factory' provides an independent learning environment where young artists are encouraged to produce works of developing depth and maturity.
Application Process
The Cultural Merit - Visual Art application process will have two stages
1. Folio Presentation
Students are to submit a folio of 10 works that best demonstrate their artistic ability. The work should be no larger than A3 size (photographs of larger works and 3D and sculptural work may be included in the folio).
Folio will be assessed on:
- analytical and interpretative drawing skills (that is you ability to draw from life, your ability to express and interpret through the drawing medium)
- experimentation with concepts, subject matter or materials (that is your willingness to go beyond the standard convention of the medium and strive for innovation and originality).
- ability to interpret, express and communicate ideas (that is the clarity and intent of the ideas and the aesthetic achievement).
2. Workshop Participation
Successful applicants will be asked to attend a workshop to demonstrate skills over a range of learning experiences.
- Final selection for Cultural Merit - Visual Art will be determined by demonstrated ability at this workshop.
